Actor Richard Kline, of “Threes Company” fame, has landed the role of the Wizard, as Wicked tickets Boston begin to really move, and Kline says he is thrilled to take the part for the production’s third run at Boston’s Opera House. The epic Stephen Schwartz musical, set in the Land of Oz from an earlier and different perspective to that of Dorothy Gale in Wizard of Oz. Veteran actor Kline says there were a number of different ways he could have approached the role of the Wiz. He ended up deciding on one that strives for harmony in Oz rather than the approaches that had come before him.
“This character has two influences that could lead you astray. The dithering Frank Morgan from the classic movie based on L. Frank Baum’s story ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,’ or the darker character from Gregory Maguire’s novel. I wanted to be very careful to do something that was different with the character. I’m playing the Wizard as a guy who just wants to hold on to power and show that he is in command. His task is to keep everything status quo.”
Kline spoke of his fondness for his former “Three’s Company” cast-mates recently but he is looking forward to being The Wizard. “When we were doing that show, I thought it was great that we got eight seasons of work out of it”, Ritter said, “but I thought it was over when it ended. I never imagined it would remain popular for as long as it has been. Farce has a life of its own as it turns out. And, in addition to that, I think a lot of the show’s enduring appeal has to do with how much people really enjoy watching good physical comedy that you don’t have to think about too much”.
